Reposaari island - Wooden houses and seascapes

Free

Wooden houses and thousands of legends! In Reposaari, you'll love the distinctive village atmosphere and the great seaside views.

Reposaari is a nationally recognised part of Pori, and for good reason. The island is unique with its many charming wooden houses, Norwegian-style church and fishing harbour with trawlers. With a population of around 1,000, this seaside town of wooden houses is also known by the nickname Räpsöö. The island is about three kilometres long and half a kilometre wide.

Reposaari's sheltered and deep natural harbour has for centuries been an important base for merchant seafarers and military explorers. After founding Pori in 1558, Juhana Duke gave Räpsöö to the city “for its enjoyment and use” - and so it has been. The soil brought to the island as ballast has brought with it seeds from foreign lands, and in summer the island blooms with exotic vegetation. You can still sense the atmosphere of the sailing era on the island.

In Reposaari you can enjoy delicious fish dishes in various restaurants and admire the infinity of the sea on the breakwater. The oldest restaurant in Finland, Restaurant Reposaari, opened in 1846, and Restaurant Merimesta are famous for their fish dishes.

You can reach the idyllic island by bus, car, boat or cruise ship (charter and public cruises), and you can spend the night in the middle of nature at Siikrananta campsite, where the rocky and stormy beaches are perfect for hiking. Alternatively, you can stay in sophisticated floating villas or in a well-equipped guest marina.

Reposaari also hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year. In summer, you can see women cycling around in their funny hats. In winter, you might come across singing elves. The crazier the idea, even more fun the event will be. In August, for example, there's a Sensommar Filmfest, with a different theme each year. The festival is a unique showcase of the most interesting filmmakers from the current year.
