Marjaniemi Lighthouse - lighthouse visit
Marjaniemi Lighthouse is one of the most iconic attractions on Hailuoto Island. Built in 1871 and first lit on 3 September 1872, it has served as an official marine navigational aid for over 150 years and remains in operation.
Overlooking the historic Marjaniemi harbour, the former sea pilot station and the picturesque fishing village, this striking white lighthouse is a true island symbol – and one of its most photographed landmarks. Designed by architect Axel Hampus Dahlström, it reflects the strong maritime heritage of Finland’s coast. While the light now uses modern LED technology, the 1950 Fresnel lens, manufactured by AGA, remains an impressive technical masterpiece. The site is protected by the Finnish Heritage Agency for its cultural and historical significance.
Climb the tower for panoramic views over the Bothnian Bay and Hailuoto’s unique coastal landscape. The experience brings together maritime history, fascinating stories, pure nature and authentic island culture.
The lighthouse is open from May to October. During peak season (late June to early August), it is open daily with evening openings available. Opening hours vary seasonally; up-to-date information is available on the official website.
During regular opening hours, advance booking is not required, but group reservations are recommended. Outside opening hours and in the off-season, visits can be arranged for individuals and groups.
Guided walking tours in Marjaniemi and local guide services across Hailuoto are also available.
